DIRECTLY ACCESSIBLE FROM CEDAR SHORES LODGE - Since Southern Door County is much quieter than Northern Door County (referred to by locals as the NorDoor), there is not as much vehicle traffic which lends itself well to biking. You can bike directly from our home and we have a few suggestions for you. There will be a trail map with your check in materials when you arrive . Southern Door Bicycle Route A 43.3 mile route with approximately .75 miles of unpaved road. This route winds along the Lake Michigan shoreline, which is where you will encounter an unpaved portion of road. Even if you walk this portion, it's well worth it for the lake views. Ahnapee Trail This is a 30-mile trail multi-use (Biking, Hiking and Horseback riding) trail stretching from the village of Casco all the way to Sturgeon Bay. Surface is made of crushed stone. The northern portion of this trail (Algoma to Sturgeon Bay) was resurfaced in 1997 and a new rest stop was built in Forestville. You can take this trail from beginning to end or use it to shorten the length of the Bike route as you see fit. The trail takes you from Lake Michigan’s rocky shore down through farm fields and orchards. Click on the link below for a map of the trail: http://map.co.door.wi.us/parks/ahnapee_trail_maps.htm There are many other trails throughout the Peninsula and at the State and County Parks. SWIMMING: The beach outside Cedar Shores Lodge is comprised of small round rock and is more rocky than sandy. There is a wooden stairway for direct access to the lake. The waters along shore are shallow to no more than 2 - 5 feet deep for about 1,000 feet off shore. The rocky beach does turn to a nice sandy bottom just a few feet from shore and is perfect to play in if the temperature and conditions are right. If you'd rather be guaranteed sand from the beach and out, there's a beautiful mile long crescent sand beach located just 5 minutes south of us in Algoma. Algoma's award winning boardwalk along the Lake Michigan shore connects the Algoma Visitor Center to the Algoma Marina. It is handicapped accessible at both ends and offers local residents and visitors alike a wonderful opportunity to enjoy the spectacular sights and sounds of Lake Michigan. In summer, sunbathing, sand castles, swimming in Lake Michigan, collecting rocks/treasurers and volleyball are popular beach-related activities. Any time of the year is great for a simply walk on the beach.

WASHINGTON ISLAND: You can also ride the ferry to the island and take your car and/or bikes. (Bikes are also available for rental on the island.) There is a lot of history on this island and it's a great place to hike. Take plenty of water, it's bigger than you think! http://www.wisferry.com/ There is also a guided motorcoach tour of the island and waters surrounding it. CONTACT: Beverly Hudson, Island Tour Guide Service 800/443-2146 (36) Or Kim Hansen, Washington Island Ferry Line 800/223-2094 While we mentioned Rock Island in the State Park section, it is worth another note here as if you have the time, it's not to be missed. There are no cars or even bikes allowed on this island . There are 10 miles of hiking trails, including a one-mile interpretive trail, a naturalist program, and 5,000 feet of beach. Once you reach Washington Island, take your car or bike (too far to walk) to the opposite end of the island and board another ferry to get to Rock Island. It's a wonderful place to go. Take a picnic and make a day of it! http://www.dnr.state.wi.us/org/land/parks/specific/rockisland/ferry.html |

Schartner's by the
Shore This place is a well-kept local secret. You won't see any advertising for this place because they don't have to - it's that good! Small supper club nestled across the road from the waters of Green Bay. Check it out!
Sunset Bar & Grill Don't let the words "bar & grill" fool you - the food is good! This place sits facing west for spectacular sunsets which can be had both inside and out. It has a real woodsy feel and serves everything from burgers to some of the best fish you'll ever have.
